Airport Highlight: Greenville Mid-Delta Airport

The Mississippi Delta stretches down the western border of our state, from Walls just below the Memphis/Tennessee border to Pinckneyville, just above the Louisiana border. Today we’re traveling midway through the Delta to Greenville, Mississippi to visit the Greenville Mid-Delta Airport.

Greenville and the Foundation of the Greenville Mid-Delta Airport

Located in Washington County, Mississippi, Greenville is considered the “heart and soul” of the Mississippi Delta and is home to a slew of famous writers, musicians, and entertainers including Mary Wilson, the founder of The Supremes. Nearby Leland, Mississippi is also home to Jim Henson, the creator of The Muppets!

Greenville is also rich in other Mississippi history. The town was destroyed during the Civil War, but resilient residents rebuilt it three miles away at the highest point of the Mississippi River. It’s home to a number of historical sites including the antebellum plantation home, Belmont.  After the reconstruction, Greenville prospered and in the 1940s and 50s, it was famous for Nelson Street, a strip of blues clubs likened to that of Beale Street in Memphis. Nelson Street earned Greenville a spot on the Mississippi Blues Trail.

In addition to its place as a historical and cultural landmark, Greenville also offers up some of the state’s finest eating. Famous Greenville restaurants include Doe’s Eat Place, Jim’s Cafe, and the eateries that make up the town’s popular Hot Tamale Trail. The town and surrounding area are also home to two casinos and some of the best shopping in Mississippi. Outdoor enthusiasts also find enjoyment in hunting, fishing, and camping at the Mississippi River and other nearby state parks.

As you can see, there is plenty to see and do in Greenville and its surrounding area around the Mississippi Delta. It's no wonder why Greenville was selected as the location for the only commercial airport in the Delta region. The Greenville Mid-Delta Regional Airport is located five miles from the town’s central business district. It is served by one commercial airline subsidized by the Essential Air Service program.

The Greenville Mid-Delta Airport offers a host of amenities including free, convenient parking, a free lounge and coffee, an on-site restaurant and car rental services, and an eTicket kiosk placed close to the baggage drop-off. For aviation professionals, the airport offers a flight planning room, pilot’s lounge, break room, and a new lobby. Charter flight services are also available.

Through the airline, Boutique Air, the airport offers daily flights from Greenville to Nashville and Dallas. Like many other regional airports in the state, Greenville Mid-Delta is also home to an industrial site whose tenants include Boutique Air, Deer Creek and Black Bayou Steam Navigation and Trading Company, Southern Fasteners, Inc., Universal Aerospace Services, and Grain Imports and Exports of Mississippi. Sam Washington serves as the current airport director.
