RS September Hilight Article

Airport Highlight : Monroe County Airport

This month’s airport highlight takes us to Monroe County, Mississippi, a county sandwiched between Lee, Itawamba, Chickasaw, and Lowndes Counties in Northeast Mississippi. The Monroe County Airport lies just off of Highway 25 South halfway between Amory and Aberdeen, Mississippi on Airport Road.

The Monroe County Airport sits near the banks of the Tenn-Tom Waterway and Tombigbee River. It is a short drive to outdoor enjoyment areas including Blue Bluff Campgrounds and Beach, The Aberdeen Marina, and the Becker Bottom Boat Ramp. River Life Kayaking and Campground in Amory are also easily accessible.

Aberdeen and Amory are small but mighty towns with many reasons to visit throughout the year. In addition to being a favorite for outdoor activities, Amory and Aberdeen both offer a host of locally-owned shops and restaurants serving up some of the South’s yummiest dishes. Accommodations include several beds and breakfasts, one hotel, two motels in Amory, and a motel in Aberdeen.

Each spring, visitors flock to Amory for the Railroad Festival, a festival featuring music, local vendors for shopping, and some of the best festival food in North Mississippi. If you’re an American Idol fan, you can stop into the Longhorn Restaurant near Becker Bottom Boat Ramp to say hello to Trent Harmon’s parents, who own and manage the restaurant. You may get lucky and meet Trent, who still stops in to say hello when he’s in town for a visit. Amory also has a city museum housed in the original Gilmore Hospital location.

Aberdeen is the county seat of Monroe County. It is home to a number of antebellum homes and the Aberdeen Black History trail. In the fall, blues and BBQ take center stage at the Bukka White Blues Festival on the banks of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway near the Aberdeen Lock and Dam.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to visit Monroe County, and the Monroe County Airport helps make your visit smooth and easy. The airport has one asphalt runway. Runway 18/60 is 4,999 feet long and 75 feet wide.

Services are offered by the airport FBO and include 100LL and JetA aircraft fueling, tie-down parking, terminal facilities, and hangar leasing. Car rental and courtesy transportation along with major airframe and powerplant aircraft maintenance are available. Amenities include a conference room, lounge, lobby, and self-serve kitchen.

Monroe County is also a short drive away from Tupelo, Columbus, and West Point, Mississippi.
