Aviation Education Programs in Mississippi

Commercial Aviation at Delta State University

In the heart of the Mississippi Delta lies Delta State University, home of the Fighting Okra. But education in vegetation isn’t the only offering from Delta State. The college offers one of the best aviation programs in the state at Delta State’s College of Business and Aviation. There’s even an on-site flight school for future aviators to earn their pilot’s license along with other formal education. In fact, it’s the only university in the state university system that provides undergraduate and graduate aviation programs. According to their mission statement, “The Department of Commercial Aviation’s mission is to provide a quality educational experience at the undergraduate and graduate level in the field of aviation and logistics. Graduates of this program will have the skills to perform in professional flight crews and as executives with supervisory and managerial responsibilities at all levels in the aviation sector.”

 

Degree programs for undergrad and grad students at Delta State include:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration and Aviation Management - this unique degree program is perfect for community college students wishing to further their technical education and for professionals ready to continue their education and increase their career opportunities. Areas of concentration include:

    • Air Traffic Control

    • Airport Transportation

    • Airport Operations

    • Unmanned Aerial Systems

    • Aviation Security

    • Logistics

  • Bachelor of Commercial Aviation - Flight Operations - If your dream is to be a pilot, this is the program for you. Delta State graduates are known throughout the industry for their high levels of proficiency and professionalism. With Delta State’s unique Commercial Aviation Program, pilots can train for their pilot license and study to obtain their university degree from the same school at the same time.

  • Bachelor of Commercial Aviation - Aviation Management - This degree prepares students for careers in supervisory and management roles at all levels in the aviation industry including airlines, corporations, and military aviation. 

  • Master of Commercial Aviation - this fully online, 30-hour program is tailored for professionals already working in the industry. Its virtual design allows students to pursue their education around their work schedule and provides them with a focused understanding of aviation concepts, operations, and management.

Hinds Community College

Just outside of the Jackson, MS metro area sits the town of Bolton and Hinds Community College. Hinds offers a host of aviation courses and programs including a two-year Associate of Arts in Commercial Aviation degree. This degree program provides students the opportunity to earn their private pilot’s license and education and training in other commercial aviation areas. Hinds Community College offers an articulation agreement with Delta State University to transfer credits to Delta’s bachelor and master degree programs. 

 

Other areas of study related to aviation at Hinds include Aviation Technology and Aviation Maintenance Technology. The Aviation Maintenance Technology program trains students to inspect, repair, service, and overhaul aircraft, engine components, and systems. The program fully prepares students to obtain their FAA Airframe and Powerplant rating as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. 

 

The Aviation Technology program prepares students for a variety of entry-level aviation careers and is ideal for someone who is just starting out. Students can choose to earn their Associate of Applied Science degree, Career Certificate, or Technical Certificate under this program.
